Architecture Discipline, a New Delhi-based architectural studio, has recently unveiled India's first mass-timber home in Goa. This innovative project, known as the Timber Residence, is a testament to sustainable construction and modern design. Located in Vagator, near the Chapora River, the house stands as a beacon of eco-friendly living.
Design and Concept
The Timber Residence is designed as a single linear block composed of 11 glued laminated timber (glulam) portal frames. Glulam, a high-strength mass-timber material, is known for its low carbon footprint and durability.
The decision to use mass-timber stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries of sustainable construction in India. The house is perched on stilts and concrete retaining walls, minimizing its impact on the surrounding landscape.
Sustainable Features
The house is designed to be minimally invasive, with the floor plate raised above the ground to protect against moisture and capillary action.
The glulam portal frames were prefabricated in Delhi and assembled on-site in Goa, allowing for incredible precision and faster construction compared to traditional methods.
The exterior is covered with charred timber cladding, a technique known as Yakisugi, which enhances durability and moisture resistance.
Interior Layout
The living area is arranged in an open plan on the lower level, culminating in two guest suites at the rear. The space is lined with glazing on three sides, allowing natural light to flood in and providing unobstructed views of the lush surroundings. A mezzanine level overlooks the living space, connected by a metal staircase.
The interior features a pared-back palette, with white walls, black granite flooring, and simple leather-upholstered furniture.
Environmental Impact
Mass-timber construction offers significant environmental benefits, including carbon sequestration and reduced emissions. The Timber Residence showcases the potential of mass-timber to revolutionize residential design in India.
Principal architect Akshat Bhatt believes that mass-timber will become a key material in redefining how homes are built, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional materials.
Conclusion
The Timber Residence by Architecture Discipline is a pioneering project that highlights the possibilities of sustainable architecture. By utilizing mass-timber and innovative design techniques, the studio has created a home that is both environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.
This project sets a new standard for residential construction in India and serves as an inspiration for future sustainable developments.
