Gabriel Rivera Arquitectos, a renowned architectural studio, has unveiled a remarkable concrete house in Ecuador, known as the Binocular House.
Located in the Puembo residential development near Quito, this 564-square-meter (6,070-square-foot) home is designed to adapt to the evolving needs of its residents, offering a versatile and sustainable living space.
Design Concept
The Binocular House was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting Gabriel Rivera Arquitectos to rethink traditional home designs.
The goal was to create a residence that could serve multiple functions, including a home, office, school, and green space, fostering family unity and flexibility.
The architectural concept revolves around a solid structure with a large interior connection space that relates to nature.
Architectural Features
The house features a reinforced concrete structure that gives the sensation of floating.
The glazed ground floor is set back behind narrow, recycled metal columns, while a large overhanging second floor adds to the floating effect.
The ground floor includes screened windows that provide privacy while opening up to the back garden. Residents enter through a rounded southwest corner into a double-height living and dining space, creating a seamless connection between the upper and lower levels.
Interior Design
The interior design of the Binocular House is unified by a palette of concrete finishes, dark wood accents, black metal details, and grey porcelain tiles.
The double-height living area is complemented by a central floating staircase with a dark wood zigzag-shaped stringer suspended on thin black metal cables.
The upper level includes three bedrooms, a terrace, and a multipurpose area that can be adapted based on the residents' needs.
